Lesson Plan Interpretation
SEFC BOOK1
Good morning! Everyone! I am glad to interpret my lesson here, the lesson plan I am going to talk about is from Senior English For China, Book 1,The Reading Period , Harry Potter from UNIT 12 Art & Literature. I will explain how to teach and the reason for doing this from following aspects.
I Analysis of teaching material.
II Theoretical basis.
III Teaching methods and studying ways .
IV Teaching procedure.
V Blackboard work.
I Analysis of teaching material.
The topic of this lesson is Harry potter. The text briefly introduces the writer J.K.Rowling, and it mainly tells about some details of Harry potter’ life. As we know, there are a series of Harry potter books and films. Our students may have already known some background knowledge about harry potter’s life. So the text is not difficult to understand. In order to help my students to get further understanding of the text and improve their reading abilities. I set following aims.
(1) Knowledge aims
The first is knowledge aims. Students should get a general impression on the writer J.K.Rowling, and students should know more about harry potter’s study, characters and belief. Also, students will master some useful words and expressions after this class.
(2) Ability aims
The next is ability aims. In this lesson, I will focus on developing my students ability of summarizing as well as skimming, scanning and task reading. What’s more, I will encourage my students to make full use of internet. You know, internet is so popular and important in our daily life.
(3) Moral aims
The moral aims of this lesson is to cultivate my students’ self-confidence and encourage them to bear the belief that any difficulty can be overcome.
That’s the teaching aims. The key points of this lesson is to improve my students reading speed and reading comprehension. While the difficult points of this lesson is summarizing.
II Theoretical basis.
Therefore, I adopt schema theory as my theoretical basis. Summarizing needs full comprehension of the text, while reading comprehension is an interactive process between the reader’s background knowledge and the text. So as a teacher, I will try to activate my students old knowledge store and add more relevant information before I get students to read the text.
III Teaching methods and studying ways .
In this reading period, I will adopt top-down approch, that is to say, background knowledge is more emphasized in this class. As for teaching aids, I will use power point, so multi-media is necessary. When it comes to learning, students will learn through independent reading, discussion and practising.
IV Teaching procedure.
Now, let’s see my teaching procedure. The teaching procedure is composed of four steps:
Step I Presentation,
Step II Reading comprehension,
StepIII Practising,
Step IV Assignment.
Step I Presentation,
Presentation includes greeting and lead-in activity. In the lead-in activity, first of all, I will show two photos on powerpoint. One is of the writer J.K.Rowling, and another is of Harry potter. I will ask my students “who are they?” to catch their attention and arouse their interests. Then I will introduce J.K.Rowling and her Harry potter books. At the same time, there will be a website on the screen(www.kidsreads.com/harrypotter/j.k.rowling). This offers my students a way to find more information about J.K.Rowling and Harry potter. In this way, my students’ awareness of using internet as studying tool can be stimulated.
After that, I will give my students two questions to discuss. These questions are about magical power. One is that think out three magical powers that you’d like to have, another is If you have magical power, what do you want to do? This can encourage my students to speak English. Some students will be asked to tell their opinions in English. any language points and good expressions they have mentioned will be written on the blackboard. Presentation is aimed to arouse my students interests in the text and get my students mentally prepare for reading.
Step II Reading comprehension,
Reading comprehension contains fast reading and careful reading,. Before fast reading, firstly, I will present new words of the text on the screen and explain some of them. Then , I will give my students a multiple choice: what does the text tell about? Students are asked to read the text within three minutes with this choice. This can train the students’ reading strategy: task reading. After finishing reading, I will check the answer that the text tells about magic and strange adventures and at the same time, I will explain how to deal with skimming, scanning and task reading. during careful reading, first, I will ask some students to read each paragragh and others to give the main idea. This activity can train my students ability of generalization and can make my students further understand the text. After main ideas are checked, true or false statements are presented for students to identify. Then, I will ask my students to read the text again with following four questions 1.Why is Harry potter’s life miserable before he goes to Hogwarts? 2.What does Harry potter leard about himself at Hogwarts?
3.What does the writer want to tell us?
4.Do you think that we can learn about the real world by reading novels? Why or why not?
These four questions are all concerned with the text. My students can find the first three question directly from the text,while the last one is an open question, students can give free answers. This is aimed to encourage my students to speak English.This question can have different answers. Through these questions, students may use some new words and expression so that they can master them.
StepIII Practice
Practice is a step that can consolidate what have learned in this class. In this step, students become real master of the class. Firstly, I will give my students three minutes to prepare to summarize the text. At the same time, some key words and expressions of the text will be listed on the blackboard. Then 1 or 2 students will be asked to give their summary orally, and I will make some comments.At the same time, I will present the summary of this text on the powerpoint as a refenrence, and I will explain how to summarize. After that , I will give four situations for students to make situational dialogues in groups of 3 of 4.(Four situations)
1.Harry potter is treated badly by the family he is living with
2. Harry potter gets the news about the school Hogwarts
3. Harry arrives at Hogwarts, what happens
4. one of the adventures of Harry potter’s
These situations are about Harry potter’s experience. If time is permitted, I will ask 1 or 2 groups to perform. This step may train students’ ability of summarizing and develop their creativity. Also, students may get deeper impression on Harry potter’s life and belief through acting out what Harry potter have experienced. So that students will confirm their belief and develop self-confidence.
Step IV Assignment
Now comes to the assignment.Make full use of your imagination & Try to write a story of adventures.
V Blackboard work.
Ok, this is my blackboard work. On the left, there are some language points and good expressions that students have mentioned in discussion. On the right, there are some key words for summarizing.
